Last week, I had the absolute pleasure of being invited to Gaja, a newly opened Indian restaurant in Bournemouth, and let me tell you—it was an experience that will linger in my memory for a long time. As someone who is passionate about Indian cuisine, I’m always on the lookout for authentic dining experiences, and this restaurant exceeded all my expectations.
Nestled in a cozy corner of Bournemouth in Charminster, this new gem has quickly become the talk of the town, and for good reason. The moment we stepped inside, we were greeted with the warmest of welcomes by the owners, a charming and beautiful couple who exuded hospitality. Their genuine smiles and gracious manner instantly made us feel at home, setting the tone for what was to be an unforgettable evening.
The restaurant’s ambiance was both elegant and inviting, a perfect blend of traditional Indian décor with modern touches. Soft lighting and vibrant colours created a warm, intimate atmosphere, ideal for enjoying a leisurely meal with friends. We settled into our seats, eagerly anticipating the culinary adventure that lay ahead.
As we perused the menu, it was clear that the restaurant took great pride in offering a diverse array of authentic Indian dishes. The selection was extensive, featuring everything from classic North Indian curries to lesser-known regional specialties. We started our evening with a round of appetizers, and I must say, the snacks were nothing short of mouthwatering.
We were served a variety of starters, including crispy papadums sizzling Paneer tikka with a perfectly spiced flavours over it, succulent chicken tikka that was marinated to perfection, and an array of chutneys that complemented each bite. The flavours were bold, yet balanced, and each dish was prepared with an evident attention to detail. It was the kind of food that transports you straight to bustling India, where the aroma of spices fills the air, and every bite is a revelation.
The main course was an absolute feast. We were treated to a spread of rich, flavourful curries, each more delicious than the last. The chicken Tikka Masala was a standout, with tender pieces of chicken bathed in a creamy, tomato-based sauce that was both indulgent and comforting. The lamb rogan josh was another highlight, with its deep, complex flavors and melt-in-your-mouth texture. We also sampled some vegetarian dishes, including a delightful Bhindi Masala and paneer makhani that was rich and satisfying, and a perfectly flavoured dal makhani that was hearty and wholesome.
The naan bread was freshly baked, soft, and just the right amount of chewy—perfect for scooping up the delicious gravies. We also couldn’t resist trying the Masala fries, which was fragrant, Spicy, and bursting with the aromatic spices that are the hallmark of a great Masala fries.
As we enjoyed our meal, the owners made it a point to check on us, ensuring that everything was to our satisfaction. Their attentiveness was genuine, and it was clear that they took immense pride in their restaurant. They shared stories about their journey in opening the restaurant and their passion for bringing authentic Indian flavours to Bournemouth. It was heartwarming to see their dedication and love for what they do, and it truly enhanced our dining experience.
Now, let’s talk about the bar—because it deserves a special mention. The bar was a vibrant hub of activity, offering an impressive selection of Indian and International beers, wines, and spirits. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic cocktail or something more adventurous, the bartenders are ready to whip up something spectacular. I was particularly impressed by the range of Indian beers on offer, a perfect pairing for the rich and spicy food. The service at the bar was impeccable, with the staff being both knowledgeable and friendly, making it a delight to explore the extensive drink menu.
No Indian meal is complete without dessert, and the restaurant did not disappoint. We indulged in the traditional Indian sweet. The Gulab Jamun with the ice cream topping was a personal favourite—soft, syrupy, and oh-so-sweet. It wonderfully refreshing after the rich main course. This was the perfect ending to a meal that was already exceptional in every way.
As the evening came to a close, we found ourselves lingering at the table, reluctant to leave. The combination of excellent food, warm hospitality, and a welcoming atmosphere made this dining experience truly special. It’s not often that you find a restaurant where every aspect—from the food to the service to the ambiance—is executed with such care and precision.
This new Indian restaurant in Bournemouth is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates authentic Indian cuisine. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, make sure to stop by and experience it for yourself. I can’t wait to return, and I’m confident that this place will quickly become a favourite among food lovers in Bournemouth. A big thank you to the owners Trevan and Kasia for inviting us and for creating such a wonderful dining experience—we’ll be back soon!
